Alberobello, a town in the heart of Puglia’s hinterlands with just over 10,000 inhabitants: you’re probably wondering what could be so special about this place?
Well, here, and only here, you will find the Trulli, buildings that are rooted in the dawn of time, that you literally won’t see anywhere else in the world. These traditional dwellings are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and it couldn’t be any other way.
Alberobello: from Past to Present
Many different stories explain the origin of the name, but one thing is certain, the official name of Alberobello was authorized in 1797 by the first city council. It was Count Giangirolamo II who started the development of the area by building clusters of houses with a material that abounded at the time, limestone, that could be used to build dry stone walls without mortar. It is here that the first trulli were born, and Alberobello is the town which today preserves an entire district of the city made only of these characteristic buildings, and because of this it is defined as the “cultural capital of the Trulli of Valle d’Itria”.
How a Trullo is born
The trulli were dry-stone peasant dwellings: in those days a tribute was paid to the Kingdom of Naples for each new construction, so, to avoid this royal tax, the Counts of Conversano ordered the inhabitants of this area to build stone houses that could be quickly demolished and rebuilt..
Today the value of a Trullo, a construction originally destined for the lower classes, is very high: in fact its purchase value is estimated at around 250 thousand euros, but this figure can vary depending on how close it is to Alberobello.
But whether or not you want to buy one, the fact remains that such a fascinating place is worth a visit on your 10 Days Luxury Vacation in Rome and Amalfi Coast.
Because of their uniqueness, the Trulli attract visitors from all over the world, and there are accommodations that will make you feel like you’re living a dream.
