Are you planning a trip to Italian wine country? Planning a special dinner? Let’s get to know a little bit more about what you are going to drink.

The wine presentation (this is valid not only for Italian wine!)

You can drink wine, but can you taste it?

Wine presentation is a ritual. You are at the restaurant and you have chosen a beautiful bottle of wine. The waiter brings you the bottle for you to inspect and taste. And now? Do you know the right steps to decide when it’s okay to refuse it?

If you don’t want to feel uncomfortable or to experience an awkward moment let’s take a look at these easy-to-learn acronyms.

Learn to taste: W.I.N.E.

The sommelier will serve your favorite bottle. No matter if it’s a bottle of Nebbiolo, Lambrusco, Franciacorta, Fiano di Avellino or a Brunello di Montalcino: the first step remains the same

  • Watch: make sure that the bottle is the right one

Spot now a possible misunderstanding. You can’t wait after the bottle is opened. Waiters are human and they can make mistakes. Remember this.

  • Inspect: is the cork damaged? Does it look suspicious?

Pay attention to details. And wait for the next step.

  • Not drinkable?

Yes, it’s the time to judge.

First of all, keep in mind that some wines need a few moments to breathe – in a decanter, preferably. Decanting any wine is a good habit – it makes them taste better, allows them to breathe and release their true essence. Many Italian wines need to be decanted: Aglianico, Barolo, Chianti, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and others.

No need to decant it? The server will pour a sampling of wine in your glass. Now it’s up to you.

Swirl and smell the wine. Then take a sip to get a feel for the flavor, the structure, and characteristics of your wine.

If the wine tastes bad you can return it. If it’s sour, vinegary, flat, or tastes like a solvent, this is your chance to return it. Describe to the waiter or the sommelier precisely what about the wine is undrinkable.

  • Enjoy

This is the best part. Your diners have been impatiently waiting for your decision and now everyone has a full glass of beautiful, unique, Italian wine, ready to toast to your unforgettable evening.
